The Wellford Energy team has experience in formulating and executing Chinese market entry strategies for US companies, including:

  • Leading the financing and EPC strategy for the Texas Clean Energy Project, a $3 billion coal gasification and carbon sequestration plant.
  • Structuring and leading the introduction of a US wind turbine manufacturer into the Chinese market. This effort resulted in a licensing deal with a major Chinese state-owned enterprise and structured options for future equity investment into the US company.
  • Structuring the strategic engagement of a US energy efficiency company, well established in China, with a range of Chinese firms in order to secure further equity investment, licensing deals, and revenue growth opportunities.
  • As chair of the energy and international practice groups at Latham and Watkins, Wellford’s chairman expanded L&W’s Asian practice leading to the opening of Latham offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo.
  • As Vice Chairman of Sithe Energies, Wellford’s chairman oversaw the development of the firm’s electric energy projects in China in the 1990s.
